Lebanon Condemns Israeli Plans in Southern Lebanon
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam made these remarks during a phone conversation on Thursday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in the context of ongoing Israeli statements and military actions in southern Lebanon.
Salam referred to repeated warnings from the Israeli defense minister regarding plans to occupy territories south of the Litani River, along with remarks by the Israeli finance minister about annexing the region.
He added that Israel had destroyed most of the bridges over the Litani River, describing the move as an effort to isolate the area from the remainder of Lebanon.
The Prime Minister also drew attention to widespread displacement affecting residents of towns and villages south of the river, coupled with daily encroachments on land, as well as the demolition and, in some cases, complete leveling of homes.
He cautioned that such measures suggest civilians may not be able to return to their homes in the near term.
Salam emphasized that these actions and statements, whether framed under what is referred to as a “security belt” or a “buffer zone,” represent a serious threat to Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rights of its citizens, while also breaching international law, international humanitarian law, and the UN Charter.
