Iraq’s Kurdish Region, Baghdad Agree to Restart Oil Shipments via Turkey
In a statement on social media, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani says the region will allow oil to flow again “as soon as possible,” citing “the extraordinary circumstances facing the country and the responsibility we all share to get through this difficult chapter.”
Barzani adds that talks with the federal government in Baghdad will continue “with urgency to lift the restrictions on imports and trade” into the Kurdish region and to ensure guarantees for oil and gas companies so they can safely resume production. He also expresses gratitude to the United States for its assistance in facilitating the process.
Iraq’s Oil Minister Hayan Abdel Ghani confirms that crude exports through Türkiye’s Ceyhan port will resume Wednesday at 10 a.m., according to reports.
The agreement comes amid heightened global energy concerns after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to most vessels in response to US-Israeli attacks that began on Feb. 28. Prior to the conflict, roughly 20 million barrels of oil passed through the strait daily, and its disruption has contributed to rising oil prices.
US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack praises the cooperation of Erbil and Baghdad. “Many thanks to Erbil and Baghdad for their work to reach agreement at this critical time to resume energy exports and improve prosperity for the region,” he writes on social media, highlighting their “courage, steadfast cooperation and commitment to the diplomatic path [that] have been truly invaluable.”
