European advisers meet in Kyiv to discuss Ukraine conflict

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said on Saturday that national security advisers from European countries have arrived in Kyiv for discussions aimed at advancing peace efforts in the ongoing war.

Umerov wrote on social media platform X that participants include representatives from Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark, as well as officials from NATO and the European Commission.

“An intensive working day lies ahead: security and economic issues, work on framework documents, and coordination of further steps with partners,” he added.

The meetings in Kyiv are part of a series of talks announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, scheduled for January, as US-mediated diplomatic efforts continue to seek a settlement to the nearly four-year-long Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Zelenskyy noted on Thursday that this meeting of national security advisers is the first of its kind in Ukraine, with the American team expected to join online for talks on Jan. 3.

He also confirmed additional discussions on Jan. 5 and 6, first between chiefs of general staff and later between European leaders and members of the “Coalition of the Willing.”

“We are preparing now to ensure that the meeting is productive, that support increases, and that there is greater political confidence both in the security guarantees and in the peace agreement,” Zelenskyy said.
