UN Raises Concern Over Safety of Gaza-Bound Global Sumud Flotilla Activists
(MENAFN) The United Nations has said it is “very concerned” about the safety of activists aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian convoy following its interception by Israeli forces, according to reports.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing that those on board must be protected and kept safe, emphasizing the importance of maritime legal protections. He stated:
“We're very concerned about the safety of all those on board. They need to be protected, and they need to be kept safe.”
He also stressed that rules governing conduct on international waters must be upheld, adding that “international law on the high seas needs to be respected.”
When asked whether the UN Secretary-General viewed the interception as a breach of international law, Dujarric said the organization did not yet have complete information, but noted: “I don't think we have all the details of how this was done, but it doesn't look like this was done in full respect of international law.”
According to reports, the convoy involved the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was seized while attempting to reach the Gaza Strip.
The UN spokesperson also renewed calls for easing restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza, urging that aid delivery should not be obstructed amid ongoing tensions in the region.
