Report Claims Iran Open to Sending Enriched Uranium Stockpile to Russia

(MENAFN) Iran is reportedly considering transferring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to Russia as part of a proposed framework aimed at easing tensions with the United States, according to reports citing a leaked document.

The reported proposal was allegedly conveyed through indirect negotiations mediated by Pakistan. Discussions between Tehran and Washington have remained stalled despite a ceasefire established earlier this year following weeks of confrontation involving Iran, the US, and Israel.

According to the reported details, Iran would be willing to suspend aspects of its nuclear activities for an extended period, but it continues to reject demands for the complete dismantling of its nuclear program. The proposal reportedly suggests that enriched uranium be moved to Russia rather than handed over to the United States.

International nuclear monitors have previously estimated that Iran possesses more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, a level below weapons-grade material but significantly above civilian-use thresholds. Weapons-grade uranium generally requires enrichment levels of around 90%.

Russia has repeatedly presented itself as a possible intermediary in negotiations and has publicly stated that it could assist by handling Iranian enriched uranium stockpiles. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently pointed to previous cooperation with Tehran on nuclear-related arrangements dating back to 2015, emphasizing Moscow’s ongoing role in Iran’s civilian nuclear energy projects.

Reports also indicated that US officials viewed the latest Iranian proposal as inadequate, suggesting that only limited adjustments had been made compared with earlier offers.

US President Donald Trump has consistently argued that Iran’s enriched uranium reserves should be transferred to American control, though he recently downplayed the practical significance of the issue, describing it largely as a matter of optics and reassurance, according to reports.
