Oxford Union President-Elect Faces Disciplinary Action
(MENAFN) The incoming president of the Oxford Union, George Abaraonye, is confronting disciplinary action and the possibility of a no-confidence vote following his contentious remarks concerning the killing of US conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The renowned debating society confirmed that formal complaints have been lodged against Abaraonye, which will be “addressed with the utmost seriousness” according to disciplinary procedures. While the Union cannot immediately remove a president-elect, its regulations permit prompt dismissal if substantial misconduct is established.
Over 200 life members of the Union – alumni who have maintained their membership – have indicated support for a no-confidence motion, exceeding the 150-signature requirement needed to initiate proceedings, a news outlet reported.
Abaraonye, who had debated Kirk at the Union in May, shared celebratory messages on WhatsApp and Instagram following Kirk’s fatal shooting during a campus event in Utah on Wednesday.
One message stated: “CHARLIE KIRK GOT SHOT LET’S F****** GO,” and another read: “Charlie Kirk got shot loool.”
He subsequently deleted these posts, asserting that they were made before Kirk’s death was officially verified, and issued a partial apology.
Abaraonye attributed his “impulsive” response to Kirk’s “horrific and dehumanising statements” on gun rights, Gaza, and LGBTQ issues.
